Zyprexa is an antipsychotic drug used for the treatment of schizophrenia. It
is Eli Lilly and Co.'s best selling drug, accounting for half of Lilly's profit.
The schizophrenia treatment was introduced to the market in 1996 as an alternative
to older treatments that are normally associated to serious side effects.
In May 2003, studies indicated that the use of antipsychotic
drugs such as Zyprexa had minimal benefits and were heavily dependent
upon particular symptoms. In addition, a growing alarm for potential
Zyprexa side effects that could result in death was occurring.
The link between Zyprexa and diabetes has continued to be made over the years,
and even though other countries have already changed Zyprexa labeling to include
Zyprexa side effect warnings. Zyprexa troubles continues to grow as Zyprexa
side effects lawsuits have been filed, sales of Zyprexa has decreased, and the
FDA may require antipsychotic drugs to highlight risk of weight gain and diabetes
on labeling, which was previously not frequently associated to Zyprexa.
Public Citizen Consumer group has been critical of the FDA and
the manufacturers because the group does not believe they have
informed physicians or Zyprexa patients of the potentially deadly
risks involved with using Zyprexa. Zyprexa manufacturer Eli Lilly
maintains there is no conclusive proof that the antipsychotic
drug has a risk of deadly and serious side effects, however there
have been 288 reported diabetes cases in Zyprexa patients, with
23 of them resulting in death.
The FDA has been criticized for failing to provide adequate information
on Zyprexa to U.S. doctors and patients. The FDA has not required
that the Zyprexa labeling is made clearer of possible risks. Though
risks of the drug might be considered to outweigh its benefits
in severe cases, Zyprexa is being prescribed more and more for
minor conditions that could be treated with a less risky drug
if patients and doctorswere given the information on Zyprexa available.
